ARTS CONCERTS SERIES PRESENTS:
Burr Phillips, baritone, will perform a vocal concert on Saturday, April 5, 7:00 pm, in the Fine Arts Concert Series at Lord of Life Lutheran Church in Plano. He will be accompanied by pianist Tara Emerson in a program of songs by Caccini, Schubert, Hahn, Finzi, Vaughan Williams, Ravel, and Rodgers & Lowe. The career of Burr Cochran Phillips encompasses both the opera and recital stages, and he has distinguished himself as a Bach specialist. He was a soloist in Bach's St. John Passion with the Austin Civic Chorus and in Bach's Cantata BWV 82 with Fort Worth Early Music. During Mr. Phillips’ seven consecutive seasons with the Carmel Bach Festival, he appeared in St. John Passion, St. Matthew Passion, Mass in B Minor, Mass in F, and Cantata BWV 130 of J.S. Bach, as well as The Creation and The Seasons of Haydn. Additional operatic appearances include the Tulsa Opera, Santa Fe Opera, Houston Grand Opera, Dallas Opera, Fort Worth Opera, San Antonio Opera Theater, and Chautauqua Opera. In 2000 he served as bass aria soloist in Bach's St. Matthew Passion, with New Texas Music Works of Austin, followed by a performance with The Madison Early Music Festival in Wisconsin, in the Vespers 1610 of Claudio Monteverdi. While working on his Bachelor of Music degree at the University of North Texas, Phillips took part in the recording of George F. Root’s 1857 dramatic cantata The Haymakers, (New World Records, #80234), taking the bass part in the quintette of “How Good Is He, the Giver” in this landmark work. Recently Phillips’ talent was the subject of a documentary entitled An American Anthology of Song for national airing on PBS. When not performing, Phillips remains extremely busy as a music educator and adjudicator of music competitions. From 1991-2000, Mr. Phillips was a faculty member of The University of Texas at Arlington, where he chaired the Division of voice beginning in 1998. He joined the faculty of the Meadows School of the Arts at Southern Methodist University in Dallas in the fall of 2000, and is assistant professor of voice. He earned Master of Music degree from TCU and is currently pursuing a doctorate in Musical Arts from Arizona State University. Mr. Phillips’ other scheduled appearances in 2003 include a “Candlelight Concert” at the famed Whim Museum of St. Croix, Virgin Islands and a solo in Mozart’s Mass in C Minor, with the Honolulu Symphony Chorus. Lord of Life Lutheran Church in Plano is located at 3601 W. 15th Street (near the Medical Center, one block east of Coit Road). The complete concert schedule is available on the church website (www.lol-plano.org) or by request from the church office at 972-867-5588. |
