OUR MISSION STATEMENT
Bring people into a living relationship with Jesus Christ by
† reaching up to God in worship and prayer,
† reaching in to be empowered by God’s Word as members of His family &
† reaching out at every opportunity with the Gospel of Christ.
WELCOME!
We pray that your time in worship will encourage and strengthen you this morning. We share the greatest hope through the One who loves you the most – Jesus Christ! As a Christian congregation we exist by the power and the grace of God. We feel it is our mission to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the plan of God’s salvation to all.
If you are a GUEST, thank you for joining us. Our greeters and pastor will be available after the service to answer any questions you have about Lord of Life. We hope to see you again soon!
LARGE PRINT BULLETIN
Copies of today’s bulletin are available in LARGE PRINT. Please ask an usher if you would like to use that larger size bulletin.
NURSERY/CRY ROOM
A staffed nursery is available for families with young children ages 2 and under in Room 109. Or, if you prefer, Room 100 is available as a cry room and/or a room for nursing mothers. Please ask an usher if you need assistance or directions.
ALL HOLY COMMUNION GUESTS please read:
“Whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. A man ought to examine himself before he eats of the bread and drinks of the cup. For anyone who eats and drinks without recognizing the body of the Lord eats and drinks judgment on himself.” 1Corinthians 11:27-29
Being admonished to receive Christ’s Body and Blood in a worthy manner, let us as Lutheran Christians prepare our hearts for reception of this sacrament by privately answering the following:
1. Do I believe that I am a sinful human being without hope of eternal life except for God’s mercy in Christ?
2. Do I believe that Jesus Christ is God’s Son and my personal Savior?
3. Do I believe that He is personally present in the Sacrament of Holy Communion with His Body and Blood?
4. Do I hope by the power of the Holy Spirit to live a godly life?
AS YOU COME TO THE LORD’S SUPPER you are affirming with each communicant that Jesus is your Savior and Lord, that you believe His Body and Blood are present, and that you desire to serve Him as a dynamic disciple in the fellowship of the church.

THE SERVICE OF WORSHIP
+++ WE GATHER AS GOD’S PEOPLE +++
AS WE GATHER
As we go through life anticipating certain milestones to occur, such as getting a driver’s license, our wedding day, our first job, we find we have to measure up to someone’s expectations. On this Reformation Sunday how does that mesh with our relationship to God? What does He expect?

OLD TESTAMENT READING Jeremiah 31:31-34
31 "The time is coming," declares the LORD, "when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah.
32 It will not be like the covenant I made with their forefathers when I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt, because they broke my covenant, though I was a husband to them, "declares the LORD.
33 "This is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after that time," declares the LORD. "I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people.
34 No longer will a man teach his neighbor, or a man his brother, saying, 'Know the LORD,' because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest," declares the LORD. "For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more."
Reader: This is the Word of the Lord.
People: Thanks be to God.
CHORAL PSALMODY Psalm 1
For the Lord knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.
Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked,
Nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers;
But his delight is in the law of the Lord, And on His law he meditates day and night.
He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season,
And its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.
The wicked are not so, But are like chaff that the wind drives away.
Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,
Nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous;
Glory be to the father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.
For the Lord knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.
EPISTLE READING Romans 3:19-28
19Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God. 20Therefore no one will be declared righteous in his sight by observing the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of sin.
21But now a righteousness from God, apart from law, has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. 22This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference, 23for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. 25God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in his blood. He did this to demonstrate his justice, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished— 26he did it to demonstrate his justice at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus.
27Where, then, is boasting? It is excluded. On what principle? On that of observing the law? No, but on that of faith. 28For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from observing the law.
Reader: This is the Word of the Lord.
People: Thanks be to God.
CHORAL ALLELUIA VERSE William Boyce
GOSPEL John 8:31-36
31To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. 32Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."
33They answered him, "We are Abraham's descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?"
34Jesus replied, "I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. 35Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. 36So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
People: Praise to You, O Christ.
PROFESSION OF FAITH The Nicene Creed
All: I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible.
And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end.
And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and life of the world to come. Amen.
